GIZ in Brussels
GIZ in Brussels
Monitoring developments, maintaining contacts, implementing projects and assisting the EU as a partner for expertise and dialogue – to carry out all these tasks, GIZ has maintained an office in Brussels, the EU’s main seat, since 1993. As liaison office for the EU, it is also responsible for maintaining working contacts at the European Commission. GIZ’s Representation in Brussels is located in the heart of the European District in Rue du Trône.
Information, advice and networking
GIZ in Brussels is in constant dialogue with the EU institutions, monitors and evaluates political developments, acts as a contact point and partner for implementing European development cooperation work, and strengthens cooperation with other entities. For example, besides the EU institutions, GIZ also works in Brussels with the European representations of the German federation and federal states, European implementing organisations, research and policy advisory institutes, foundations, associations, non-governmental organisations and businesses.
Promoting dialogue, sharing experience, developing ideas
GIZ brings relevant topics to the attention of its partners in Brussels, shares experiences and expertise from its work on the ground and provides introductions to its expert contacts who implement projects in more than 120 countries. To this end, GIZ participates in meetings, workshops and conferences such as the European Commission’s annual European Development Days. It also organises series of events of its own to encourage the exchange of ideas on current issues and approaches in international cooperation.
One of the established partnerships in Brussels is the Practitioners’ Network for European Development Cooperation, the platform of the European implementing organisations. Founded in 2007 with the support of GIZ, the network promotes practical exchange with the European Commission and works to harmonise and coordinate development approaches. GIZ also takes part in the Development Policy Forum, set up by the Brussels think tank Friends of Europe, by assisting with events and providing specialist contributions, for example.
A direct line: GIZ International Services and projects
In addition to its Representation, GIZ also has a branch of its International Services business area in Brussels. The office in Rue de la Charité is responsible for GIZ’s participation in EU tenders and the management of cross-border EU commissions, which GIZ carries out from Brussels.
Various EU-cofinanced projects also have contact persons in Brussels – including projects in the climate and energy sectors and in the field of security and stabilisation.
